What's New at
Culpepper Connections!
Highlights of our updates since January 2003
First Quarter 2008
 |
A new version of the Culpepper Family
Tree was published on
March 30, 2008.
We have added 600 new individuals, nearly 400 of whom are
Culpeppers. We’ve also updated the records for about 2,400 other
individuals, including quite a few old photographs added by Lew
Griffin. Our next update is scheduled around
July 1, 2008 |
 |
Northern
Mississippi Data in Family Tree. The archival data (see next entry)
for all of the counties in Northern Mississippi have been used to create
new family tree records and update many others. Southern Mississippi
updates should be complete before the July 1 family tree update. (30 Mar 2008) |
 |
Mississippi Archives.
Shannon O’Connor Christian has provided transcriptions of the Culpeppers found in
the1850-1910 US Census for Mississippi. Both Shannon and Linda Cushing
transcribed 1920, splitting the counties between them. And Malcolm
Wickes Culpepper has provided transcriptions for 1930. All of the census
entries, along with all of the marriage, land, death and burial records
which we could find were added to our
Mississippi archives. (10 Mar 2008) |

A Newly Discovered Culpepper Cousin:
Diana Princess of Wales Diana's 12th great-grandfather was John Culpeper of Wigsell (1531-1612).
Most modern-day Culpeppers also descend from John. This may make Diana your
13th cousin, more or less, depending on the number of ancestors between you
and John. Put a smile on your granddaughter's (or grandmother's) face and
tell her she has a real princess for a cousin. (Genealogical
details) (10 Mar 2008) |

DNA
Project. Over the past several months, a great deal of
behind-the-scenes effort has been expended on our DNA project. This
includes attending a genealogical DNA conference in Houston,
identifying potential project members, soliciting their membership,
organizing and analyzing test results and splitting out the family
into a larger number of smaller branches. We also continue to refine
some of our ancestral theories based upon the results of our DNA
testing. Currently there are 45 project members, and we are
targeting a total of 100 or more by the end of 2008. For a rewritten
and simplified explanation of what DNA testing is all about, how it
is helping us, and how you can help, see:
DNA. |
 |
Family Tree Charts. About 250 branches of our family are now
pictorially illustrated in chart form, more than double the number
that we previously displayed. Each has been made more compact and
more relevant to each family member's immediate branch. See

new look and easier to read format. We have posted about 200 new
names and about 1200 other names with updated information. Many of
these new and updated names are from North Carolina. We have also revised
some of our ancestral theories based upon the results of our DNA
testing, |
 |
North Carolina and Virginia Updates planned. We have initiated work on
our next major project in which we will post North Carolina and Virginia
transcriptions of deed, tax and probate records that have been gathered
during many research trips to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
We will also enter all applicable Culpeppers from the Ancestry.com and USGenWeb databases
into our Virginia archives. Expected completion date is mid 2008.
|
 |
North Carolina Archives. We have completed our project to enter all
applicable Culpeppers from the Ancestry.com and USGenWeb databases
into our North Carolina Culpepper Archives.
We have also attempted to
match and transfer all of this archival data to the appropriate records in
our family tree. |

Charts Can Now Be Printed! Since our
charts were first published nearly five
years ago, most people have not been able to print them. Users of
Internet Explorer 7.0 should now be able to get good results.
|
 |
DNA Testing Project.
We have launched DNA project to give Culpeppers of every
background and nationality worldwide an opportunity to discover their
early roots, and to confirm how they might be related to others who bear
the Culpepper, Culpeper, or Colepeper surname. To participate directly
in the project, you must be a male with the surname of Culpepper,
Culpeper, or Colepeper. More information on the
DNA project. |
 |
North
Carolina Archives. A major project was launched in February 2007 to
enter all Culpeppers from the Ancestry.com and USGenWeb databases into
our North Carolina Culpepper Archives.
We will also post transcriptions of deed, tax and probate records that
have been gathered during many research trips to the Family History
Library in Salt Lake City. When this archive posting is complete, we'll
then attempt to match and transfer all of this archival data to the
appropriate records in our family tree. Expected completion date is 30
Jun 2007. |
 |
Texas
Archives. A massive 15-month-long project on the
Culpepper Texas Archives has now
been completed. From State and Federal records for Texas, we have
entered over 2,600 enumerations of Culpeppers in US censuses, 2800+
birth records, 1100+ marriages, 600+ divorces, and 1200+ deaths. Over
90% of these have been matched and posted to records within our
Family Tree. Please let us know if you can
identify any of the unmatched
records. |

Why so
few recent updates. Regular visitors to this site will notice few
updates have been made in recent months. We haven't lost interest, but
one of our two publishers, Lew Griffin, has
been concentrating in recent months on his other family lines. The other
publisher, Warren Culpepper, has been
involved with the relocation to a new home in Atlanta as well as in the
training of a new Golden Retriever puppy. Expect to see an increased
level of update activity in the fall. |

ancestry of John Culpeper the Merchant.
John Culpeper, the Merchant (born
1606), is the progenitor of virtually all American Culpeppers. In John's
GEDCOM, we detail his ancestry back to Sir Thomas Colepeper, the
Recognitor (born 1170), as well as to three Magna Carta Sureties of
1215; to Charlemagne, Emperor of the West (born 742); and to Alfred the
Great (born 849). A GEDCOM is a standard genealogical file used as input
to genealogical programs such as Family Tree Maker or The Master Genealogist. The
John Culpeper GEDCOM is the only one we make available, and it was last
updated 11 Dec 2005. (Download GEDCOM) |

Norfolk Personal Property Tax Records and Tithables.
From our July trip to Salt Lake City, I have added transcripts of
extant Norfolk Personal Property Tax Records, from microfilms of the
original records, to our Virginia Archives, for the years 1782-1850.
And I have excerpted extant Norfolk Tithables from 1730 to 1782 from
records previously published by Elizabeth Wingo (We need to look at
the originals for these as well.). These records include important
clues about relationships, and occasionally mention specific
relationships by name. We learn when someone first appeared in the
records, and when they last appeared in the records, including, in
some cases, widows. We also learn, for some years, where each
Culpepper lived in the county, which will help us identify the various
John, Thomas, Robert and William Culpeppers of early Norfolk. And we
get a glimpse into the lives of the Norfolk Culpeppers. Details vary
by year, but some year or another might mention the number of cattle,
number of horses, number of slaves (and in some years, names of
slaves). In later years, gold watches, mahogany desks, clocks, etc,
were mentioned. |
 |
Early Norfolk VA wills. I have also added new
transcripts of several additional early Norfolk VA wills prior to
1860. |
 |
James Culpepper of Nash. With this update, I
have connected James Culpepper of Nash (died 1799) to his probable
father Henry. This connection was already implied in his text file,
and will make it easier for his descendants to follow his probable
ancestry. |
 |
Sion/Zion Culpepper. I have also connected Sion
Culpepper (probable father of Zion Culpepper of eastern NC) to his
father John Culpepper. This John (with wife Mary) could only have
been John Culpepper, son of Robert Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk. Sion was
mentioned as the son of John in the early Norfolk tax records
mentioned above. |
 |
Charles William Culpepper Descendants. And with
this update I have added biographical notes on various descendants of
Charles William Culpepper (1824-1900) of Gordon County, GA, from a
manuscript written around 1980 by his granddaughter Kathryn English
Culpepper (1905-1996). Lorinda Culpepper has the original
manuscript. She was kind enough to send me a copy. My thanks to our
cousin Gayle L. Poole for transcribing it. |
 |
Photos. As always, I have added more old
Culpepper family photos, including, for example, one of Confederate
soldier Captain Noah Smith Culpepper, in uniform. We now have photos
of more than 400 folks in our family tree. Your continued help in
sending us copies of your old Culpepper photos is appreciated. |
 |
Joseph Culpepper of SC. For those of you who
descend from Rev. War Soldier Joseph Culpepper of SC, I’ve added an
1818 deed (in effect, it is his will) in which he mentions his wife
Ann (formerly Geiger), his son Joseph Richard, and his granddaughter
Sarah Ann. This deed proves that Ann (Theiler) Geiger was indeed
Joseph Richard’s mother. I’ve also added several generations of
additional Geiger ancestry in Switzerland, thanks to the research of
correspondent Harriet Imrey. Joseph Richard Culpepper’s wife was
Sylvia Geiger. |
 |
Randolph County, AL Area. Culpepper descendants
of Rev. Allen Wood (1789-1852) will be interested to hear that Susan
H. Wood has sent us the full text of his will, for this update. Rev.
Wood is in our files, because more than one branch of the Culpeppers
descends from him, and we like to show these sorts of connections to
other families in our family tree. |
|
 |
Warren
Culpepper's updates.
 |
Georgia
Archives. Using the new data gathered during the July trip to the
Family History Library in Salt Lake City, the Georgia archives have
been extensively expanded. This information was then used to update
our family tree, and the records for 1,745 Georgians in the family
tree have been updated or added. This includes births, marriages,
deaths and burials, and detailed entries for the source of all of this
information. |
 |
Georgia
Census Records. We have completed the posting of census records for
every Caucasian Culpepper to appear in any extant US census: 1790 -
1930. These records are both in our archives and in the appropriate
individuals' family tree records. |
|

Culpeper of Delft, Holland |

Images of Early English Wills. About 50 old English wills have been
downloaded, and we would appreciate help in transcribing some of them. See
Early English Wills. |
 |
A new version of the
Culpepper Family Tree was published
Sunday,
11 Jul 2004. We have revised the format to improve readability and added
over 1,000 additional names. In addition, a newly revised version of our
web publishing program has enabled us to return to our previous policy
of displaying the names of the living people within our family tree,
while excluding their dates, locations and other details. |
 |
Georgia
Archives Updates. The Georgia Archives
have been reorganized by county and a considerable volume of deeds,
marriages, deaths, and census records have been posted here as well as
applied to the family tree. This process has been completed for all but
12 of Georgia's 159 counties, and the remainder should be completed in
time for our autumn update to the family tree. |
 |
Lew
Griffin updates for past four months
 |
Beginning with the July update, Warren and
I have begun adding “Research Notes” to individuals in the Family Tree
whose ancestry may not be entirely proven. Our goal is that anyone
interested in researching their direct line can “pick up their
research where we left off.” In the Research Notes, we’ll 1) at least
note that someone’s ancestry is not proven; or 2) point out why we
think this individual probably belongs in the family tree where we
have placed him, even though final proof is lacking, and / or 3) offer
suggestions for further research. Of course, the Culpepper Family
Tree has always been a collaborative effort of many hundreds of able
researchers, and your contributions of ideas for these research notes,
and help with new research, are not only welcome, but are vital to the
success of our Culpepper web site. |
 |
With this update, we are offering an Index
of folks who may need further research. Many of these have Research
Notes, some do not. By the next update, we hope to have Research
Notes for just about every individual in the family tree who needs
one. |
 |
For Norfolk Co., VA, I have added
summaries or in some cases the full text of the earliest Culpepper
wills to the family tree. We’ll add more full texts of early Norfolk
VA Culpepper wills in the next update. |
 |
Also for Norfolk County, VA, I have added
new details from Emily L. Walker’s “Norfolk County Death Register 1870
– 1896” and from her “Norfolk County Birth and Death Register” which
covers available records from 1853 to 1874. |
 |
Those of you who descend from the John
Culpepper (ca. 1820 – 1889) of Norfolk who married Elizabeth “Drew”
might be interested to hear that her maiden name was actually “Rew”
and that Elizabeth was the daughter of Southey Rew. |
 |
And descendants of John’s brother Benjamin
Culpepper (ca. 1812 – 1877) of Norfolk might be interested to know
that his wife Nancy’s maiden name was Hoggard, or Haggard, or Hoggood.
You might compare these spellings in our Culpepper Family Tree Index
for other related references to this same surname in this general
branch of the family. |
 |
One of my goals for the trip to Salt Lake
City in July is to obtain additional records on the early Norfolk
Culpeppers; in particular: Tithable records from 1781 to 1785, and
Personal Property Tax lists from 1782 to 1789, and from 1808 forward.
See the VA Archives for these tax lists from 1791 – 1807.
These tax records should help us sort out the early Norfolk VA Culpeppers, so many of
whom had the same first name, such as John, Thomas, etc. |
 |
And with this update, I have begun to add
photos from my own collection of old photos, for each of the children
and grandchildren of John Culpepper (1772 – 1855) & Nancy Gillespie of
Randolph Co. AL, and their spouses. As many of you know, this is my
direct line: I descend from Lewis Peek Culpepper (1816 – 1915),
youngest son of John and Nancy. |
 |
I have also added some wonderful old
Culpepper photos contributed by others. Check the photo index at the
web site to see if a photo of one of your ancestors has been added.
And thanks to those of you who shared old photos. |
 |
In the John Culpepper / Nancy Gillespie
family of Randolph County, AL, I have added many new details on
long-lost descendants of Civil War casualty James Lafayette Turley of
Chambers Co. AL and his wife Martha Custis Culpepper. This family
went first to Greene Co. AR, and some then went to Texas. |
 |
I continue to add records to the Culpepper
Archive here and there from the December 2003 trip to Salt Lake City.
For instance, I have added about ten new WW I soldiers from AR, from
published records. See the Military section of our web site. Some of
these were from other states originally. |
 |
I have also added some birth and death
records for a few Culpeppers in AR to our family tree, from published
sources. The names I could not match are in our Arkansas Archives at
the web site. |
|

The Culpepper Linkage to Charlemagne, Emperor
of the West (born 762) All living Culpeppers, worldwide,
descend from William Culpeper of Hunton and Wigsell and
his wife, Cicely Barrett. Cicely Barrett's ancestry has been
traced back to European royalty and to Charlemagne, Emperor of the
West during the 9th century. William Culpeper's ancestry has been
traced back to Sir Thomas Colepeper, born 1170.
While these lineages have
long been contained within our family tree, we have now highlighted them
through the use of two new charts:
Ancestry of John Culpeper of Wigsell
(son of Cicely Dingley Barrett and William Culpeper)
Descendants of Charlemagne down to the
17th Century Culpepers. (6 Jan 2004) |
