Colbert County

History

Colbert County was formed in 1867 from Franklin County. Located in the northwestern part of the state, it is bordered by the Tennessee River and the the counties of Lauderdale, Lawrence, Franklin and Tishomingo Co., MS. The western half of Colbert is within the Southeastern Plains Region, and the eastern half is part of the Interior Plateau. The county seat is at Tuscumbia, and other towns  include Cherokee, Sheffield, Leighton, and Muscle Shoals. Tuscumbia is on US-72 and US-43, across the river from Florence, and is 70 miles west of Huntsville and 110 miles northwest of Birmingham.
