Lauderdale County
History
Lauderdale County was formed in 1818 from Indian lands.
Located in the northwestern corner of the state, it is bordered on the south by
the Tennessee River. It is also bordered by the Alabama counties of
Limestone,
Lawrence, Colbert, the Mississippi county of
Tishomingo, and the Tennessee counties of Hardin, Wayne and Lawrence. The
western half of Lauderdale County is within the Southeastern Plains Region, and
the eastern half is part of the Interior Plateau.
The county seat is at Florence. Other towns and communities include St. Florian,
Lexington, and Cloverdale. Florence is on US-43 and US-72, about 70 miles west
of Huntsville and 120 miles northwest of Birmingham.
