Limestone County

History

Limestone County, formed in 1818 from Indian lands, is located in north central Alabama in the Interior Plateau Region. It is bounded by the counties of Madison, Morgan, Lawrence and Lauderdale and the Tennessee counties of Giles and Lincoln. Athens is the county seat. Other towns of note are Belle Mina, Elkmont, Capshaw and Mooresville. Athens is on I-65 about 20 miles west of Huntsville and 80 miles north of Birmingham.
