History
Washington County
was created in 1800 as a county of the Mississippi Territory. Its original
boundaries were the Chattahoochee River to the east, the Pearl River to the
west, the 32nd parallel to the north and the 31st parallel to the south. Its
area originally contained 26,400 square miles. The Washington County area was
later divided into 16 Mississippi counties and 29 Alabama counties. By 1850 it
had assumed its current boundaries which is in southwestern Alabama in the
Southeastern Plains Region. Washington is bordered by the Alabama
counties of Choctaw, Clarke and
Mobile, and the Mississippi counties of
Wayne
and Greene. Its county seats have included McIntosh's Bluff, Wakefield, St.
Stephens, and now Chatom. Chatom is 60 miles north of Mobile and 70 miles east
