Cherokee County

History

Cherokee County was created in 1836 from land ceded by the Cherokee Indians by the treaty of New Echota. It is located in the northeastern portion of the state in the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. It is bordered by the Alabama counties of DeKalb, Etowah, Calhoun and Cleburne, and the Georgia counties of Chattooga, Polk and Floyd. Since 1844, the county seat has been the town of Centre. Centre is on US-411 about 90 miles northeast of Birmingham.

Early Culpepper Settlers

Cherokee County

The first Culpeppers in northeast Alabama were Joel Culpepper (son on Benjamin Culpepper of South Carolina) and his family. Joel was born in the Orangeburg District of South Carolina in 1782, was still in South Carolina in 1820, appeared in McGinn County, Tennessee in 1830. By 1840, the families of Joel and one of Joel's sons, John Tyler, had settled in Cherokee County, Alabama, and the modern day Culpeppers in Cherokee county appear to be the descendants of John Tyler's son, John A. Walter "Mack" Culpepper (1853-1910).
