Hale County

History

Hale County was created in 1867 from Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Perry, Marengo, and Greene counties, and those counties form its borders today. Located in the west-central section of the state in the Southeastern Plains Region, Hale is drained by the Black Warrior River. The county seat is Greensboro, which calls itself the "Catfish Capital of Alabama". Other towns and communities in the county include Moundville, Newbern , Havana, Wedgeworth, Cedarville, and Sledge. Greensboro is 40 miles south of Tuscaloosa, 85 miles southwest of Birmingham, and 90 miles WNW of Montgomery.

Culpepper Connections Note: The census record did not make it clear which school the Culpeppers were attending. However, since they were sons of a prosperous family in nearby Wilcox County, most likely they were attending Greene Springs School, which operated from 1847 to 1884 as one of the State's academies. Called "Rugby" of the South, it prepared a number of Alabama leaders and was one of the first schools to add the study of science and government to the usual classics. (A historical marker for this school is located on Alabama Highway 60)
