Jackson County
History
Jackson County was
created in 1819 from land acquired from the Cherokee Indians. It is located in
the northeastern corner of the state in the Appalachian Mountain Region. It is
bounded in Alabama by DeKalb,
Marshall and Madison counties, in Tennessee by
Franklin and Marion counties, and in Georgia by Dade
County. Most of the county is drained by the Tennessee River. Scottsboro is the
county seat. Other towns and communities include Bridgeport and Stevenson.
Scottsboro is on US-72 about 40 miles east of Huntsville, 50 miles southwest of
Chattanooga, TN, and 100 miles NNE of Birmingham.

Early Settlers
The first Culpeppers in Jackson County were the family of
Emanuel Joseph Culpepper.
Emanuel was born in Warren County, Georgia in 1824. In 1848, his brother
William married Pamelia (Permelia) Ann Phillips. William and Pamelia had only one known
child, Indiana, before William died. Emanuel then married Pamelia in
Georgia in about 1850, and had migrated west to Jackson County with her by the
1860 census.
Nearly all of today's Jackson County Culpeppers appear to be Emanuel Joseph's
descendants. Emanuel was the son of William Culpepper (born about 1788 in Wilkes Co., GA),
son of Daniel Culpepper (born about 1750 in Nash Co., NC), son of William Culpepper (born
about 1719), son of Joseph Culpepper (born about 1698 in Norfolk, VA), son of Robert
Culpepper (born about 1664 in Norfolk, VA)
