Lamar County

History

Lamar County was formed in 1867, and was named both Jones and Sanford County before taking on its current name in 1877. Lamar is bordered by Marion, Fayette, and Pickens counties in Alabama, and by Lowndes and Monroe counties in Mississippi. The county is drained by the Tombigbee River. The county seat is at Vernon. Other towns and communities include Sulligent, Beaverton, and Millport. Vernon is about 90 miles west of Birmingham, 50 miles NW of Tuscaloosa, and 30 miles northeast of Columbus, Mississippi.
