Russell County
History
Russell County was
formed in 1832 from former Creek Indian territory. It is located in the
south-central eastern part of the state in the Southeastern Plains Region.
Russell is bordered by the Alabama counties of Barbour,
Bullock, Macon and
Lee,
and the Georgia counties of Muscogee and
Stewart. The first county seat
was first in Girard, then Seale, and since the 1930s in Phenix City. Other towns
of note include Fort Mitchell and Hurtsboro. Phenix City is across the
Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia and is 80 miles east of Montgomery.
