Shelby County

History

Shelby County was formed in 1818 from former Creek Indian territory ceded in the Treaty of Fort Jackson. It is located in the north-central part of the state in the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. About one-half of the county is in the mineral belt. Shelby is bounded by Jefferson, St. Clair, Talladega, Chilton, Bibb, and Tuscaloosa counties. About one-half of the county is in the mineral belt. The  county seat was is Columbiana. Other towns and communities include: Calera, Pelham, and Montevallo, home of the University of Montevallo. Columbiana is about 20 miles south of Birmingham.
