History

In the southwestern corner of Arizona, Yuma County was formed in 1864 as one of four original Arizona counties. In 1983, La Paz County was formed from the northern half of Yuma. Yuma's county seat, the city of Yuma, is on I-8 about 185 miles west of Phoenix. Yuma County is bordered by the Arizona counties of La Paz, Maricopa and Pima, plus the state of California and the Mexican state of Sonora.
