Culpeppers at Ellis Island
1892-1924

From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, passengers, and crew members came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies that transported these passengers kept detailed passenger lists, called ship manifests. These manifests were transcribed into an electronic archive, from which Culpepper Connections! has extracted the relevant Culpepper family entries.

Three variations of the spelling of Culpepper have been found in the Ellis Island records, and we do not believe that any significance should be attached to the specific name form found. In addition to the nearly 100 entries for the 3-p Culpepper, there are eight 2-p Culpeper and one plural Culpeppers. Note that the majority of the records are for crew members and passengers from Barbados, where the 2-p Culpeper spelling has been consistently used since the family's appearance on that island 450 years ago. So if the spelling could be relied upon, the vast majority of the entries would have been in the Bajan 2-p form and not the 3-p form that is more familiar to Americans. Note that even for those unfamiliar with the spelling, the natural phonetic spelling would include the common word pepper at the end.

However, to be consistent with the records we found, the original spelling has been preserved.

If we have been unable to identify the individual in our family tree, we have placed the name in red. If you can identify any of these, please let us know.

Allen L. Culpepper of Savannah, b 17 Sep 1889 in Fayetteville, Hoke Co., NC, and wife, Marcelle Culpepper, b 31 Aug 1889 [SSDI], probably in France, and d Feb 1967). As Allen appears to have an identical birth date and place with Arthur, they may be twins. Also note that Allen's return on 25 Jan 1917 was only two months after Arthur's return on 13 Nov 1916. Perhaps they went over together with the group of horsemen, but Allen met Marcelle, stayed over, married her, and returned with his new wife two months later than his brother's return.

bullet

Emma McCutcheon Culpepper, born 13 Jul 1873 in Marietta, Cobb Co., GA, widow of George William Culpepper, Sr. and mother of George William Culpepper, Jr. below. (Note that the 1900 census indicates Emma was born in May 1873, in spite of her claims at Ellis Island that she was born variously in 1880, 1881 or 1884. The 1873 birth year from the census is more plausible, given that her son was born in 1892. But since she said three times at Ellis Island that she was born on July 13, that month and day is likely to be true.)
