History
In the northwestern
corner of Indiana,
and once the home of many steel mills in Hammond and
Gary, Lake County was formed in 1836 from Porter and Newton counties. Its county seat,
Crown Point, is on
I-65 about 35 miles southeast of Chicago. Lake is bordered by the Indiana counties of
Porter, Jasper and Newton, the Illinois counties of Kankakee, Will and Cook, and
by Lake Michigan.
