History

In the Eastern Coalfields Region of southeastern Kentucky, Letcher County was formed in 1842 from Perry and Harlan Counties. Its county seat, Whitesburg, is on KY-15, about 125 miles southeast of Lexington. Letcher is bordered by the Kentucky counties of Harlan, Perry, Knott and Pike, as well as by Wise Co., VA.
