Neshoba County

County History

Neshoba County was formed in 1833 from territory ceded by the Choctaw nation. The name “Neshoba” is an Indian word meaning “grey wolf.” In 1836, land was taken from it to form the present county of Newton. The county seat and largest city is Philadelphia, which was the site of one of the most famous race-related crimes in American history. In 1964, three civil rights workers were murdered there by white supremacists. The crime and decades-long legal aftermath inspired the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning. The county is also known for its Neshoba County Fair and harness horse races. Plus, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI) own one of the largest casino complexes in the state. As of the 2000 census, Neshoba County's population was 28,684. Adjacent counties are Winston County (north), Kemper County (east), Newton County (south) and Leake County (west).
