County History
Wayne
County as formed in 1809 from the western portion of what is today,
Washington County, Alabama. It was named in honor of the Revolutionary
hero, General Anthony Wayne. Out of its vast initial region have been
subsequently carved the counties of Greene, Covington, Jones, Perry,
Lamar, and portions of Lawrence and Marion. In 1892, most records were
destroyed. As of 2000, Wayne County's population was 21,216. The county
seat and largest town is Waynesboro. Other towns include State Line,
Clara and Buckatunna. Adjacent counties are Clarke
County (north), Choctaw County, Alabama
(northeast), Washington County, Alabama
(southeast), Greene County (south), Perry County
(southwest), Jones County (west) and
Jasper County (northwest).
