William Culpepper of Camden Co., NC, son of Accountis Culpepper, enlisted as a private in Company B of the 21st Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteers on 29 Oct 1863. This was the Union force occupying Camden County at the time. William was 19 years old and the enlistment paper states that he was "a refugee from North Carolina who came into our lines to escape imprisonment by a band of Confederate guerillas."  He spent the rest of the war apparently building trenches and such, and received a medical discharge on 30 May 1865.  Interestingly enough, his pension and later the United States Army's widow's pension was the only thing that kept his family out of poverty in those desperate times.
