History

In the Lake Country of south central Oklahoma, Pontotoc County was formed in 1907 from Chickasaw Nation land. Its county seat, Ada, is about 70 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Pontotoc is bordered by the counties of Seminole, Hughes, Coal, Johnston, Murray, Garvin, McClain and Pottawatomie.

Census Records

Oklahoma was opened to white settlers with the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The earliest extant census for Oklahoma Territory is for 1900, and Oklahoma Territory became a state in 1907. No Culpeppers have been found in any Pontotoc County censuses prior to 1940.
