Marlboro District/County

History

In the northeastern South Carolina part of the Sand Hills region, Marlboro County was formed in 1785 from Cheraws District. In 1798, Cheraws District was abolished and some of its counties, including Marlboro, became Districts. In 1868, Marlboro District was designated Marlboro County. Its county seat, the town of Bennettsville, is on US-15/401, about 80 miles southeast of Charlotte, NC, and 90 miles ENE of Columbia. Marlboro County is bordered by the South Carolina counties of Dillon, Florence, Darlington and Chesterfield, and the North Carolina counties of Richmond, Scotland and Robeson.
