Newberry District/County

History

In the upper South Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Newberry County was formed in 1785 from Ninety-Six District. In 1798, when the counties of Ninety-Six District were abolished, it became Newberry District. In 1868, Newberry District was designated Newberry County. Its county seat, the town of Newberry, is on I-26, about 80 miles southwest of Charlotte, NC, and 40 miles northwest of Columbia. Newberry County is bordered by the counties of Union, Fairfield, Lexington, Saluda, Greenwood and Laurens.
