Richland District/County

History

In the middle South Carolina part of the Sand Hills region, Richland County was formed in 1785 from Camden District. In 1786 the state legislature decided to move the capital from Charleston to a more central location. A site was chosen in Richland County, which is in the geographic center of the state, and a new town was laid out. Columbia subsequently became not only the center of government but an important trade and manufacturing center. Cotton from the surrounding plantations was shipped through Columbia and later manufactured into textiles there. In 1791, a small part of Richland went to Kershaw County. In 1798, Camden District was abolished and its counties, including Richland became districts. In 1868, Richland District was designated Richland County. Its county seat, Columbia, is at the junction of I-20, I-77 and I-26. It is about 110 miles northwest of Charleston, and 80 miles south of Charlotte, NC. Richland County is bordered by the counties of Fairfield, Kershaw, Sumter, Clarendon, Calhoun and Lexington.
