Union District/County

History

In the upper South Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Union County was formed in 1785 from Ninety-Six District. In 1791, it became part of Pinckney District, and then in 1798, when the counties were abolished, it became Union District. In 1868, Union District was designated Union County. Its county seat, the town of Union, is on US-76, about 55 miles southwest of Charlotte, NC, and 55 miles northwest of Columbia. Union County is bordered by the counties of Cherokee, York, Chester, Fairfield, Newberry, Laurens and Spartanburg.
