York District/County

History

In the upper South Carolina part of the Piedmont region, York County was formed in 1785 from Camden District. In 1791, Pinckney District was formed from parts of Camden and Ninety-Six District, taking the counties of Chester, Spartanburg, Union and York. In 1798, Pinckney District was abolished and its four counties, including York, became Districts. In 1868, York District was designated York County. Its county seat, the town of York is on US-331 about 30 miles southwest of Charlotte, NC and 80 miles north of Columbia. York County is bordered by the South Carolina counties of Lancaster, Chester and Cherokee, and the North Carolina counties of Cleveland, Gaston and Mecklenburg.
