Sir
Alexander Culpeper 9b
He was born about 1479. His will was
probated 21 January 1541. He inherited Bedgebury in Goudehurst,
county Kent. He was knighted by King Henry VII. He first married
Agnes, daughter of Roger Davy. They had a daughter, Alice, who
married Sir Adam Newington, county Sussex. His second wife,
Constantina, daughter of Sir Robert Chamberlin of county Sussex.
They had five daughters and three sons. The oldest and the
youngest was named Thomas. John died young. |

Thomas
Culpeper 10b, the youngest.
He is known in history as the favorite
jouster and court attendent of King Henry VIII, who had him
beheaded for his love affair with his cousin, Queen Catherine, the
king's fifth wife. See chapter one.
Thomas Culpeper 10b,
the oldest
He was also a favorite of King Henry VIII's court. He
first married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Howte, of Borne.
Their daughter Margaret, married Thomas Culpeper 14p, of Preston
Hall. Their son and heir was Sir Alexander Culpeper. Thomas'
second wife was Helen Hendley. |

Alexander Culpeper 11b
He inherited Bedgeburyand married Mary, daughter of Lord
William Dacre. Their only son and heir was Sir Anthony. |
Francis
Culpeper, Esq. 11h
Born in 1538 and died in 1591, and
buried in Hollingbourn church. He first Married Philippa Hinkstead
in 1567. She died in 1574. They had two sons: John, 1568-1607,
left three generation then became extinct in 1693. Walter, 1573 to
1595, was killed in battle in Holland unmarried. He married next
Joan Pordage, in 1574. She died in 1598, age fifty-three. Their
son and heir was Thomas. |
Dr.
Martin Culpeper 11f
He was born in 1540 and died in 1605. He was a Dr. of physics and
head of New College! at Oxford. He married Lettice daughter of
Humphrey Clarke, about 1578. They had: Sir Martin, 12f, 1580-1604,
who married Joyce Aston and had a son Martin, that died as a child
in 1605. Sir Stephen, 1581-1611, left no children. Mercy,
1580-1623. At the death of Dr. Martin, his will stipulated that
his estate go to his nephew John Culpeper. |

Anthony Culpeper 12b
He married Ann, daughter heiress of Sir
Roger Martin of London. They had five sons, four died young,
Alexander survived. Mary, was their daughter. |

Thomas Culpeper 12h
Born in 1575 and died in 1662. lie
married Elizabeth Cheny, who was born in 1582 and died 27 Oct
1638. They had eleven children: Cheny, 13h, 1601-1663, married his
cousin, Elizabeth Stede in 1632. His father bought Wigsell for him
from his cousin Sir John Culpeper 13w. Paulina, 1603-1625,
married Walter Harlakenden. Elizabeth, 1605-1626, died unmarried.
Judith, 1606-1651, married Baron, Lord John Culpeper 13w, in
1631. Joan, born 1607, married Sir William Cage in 1637. Francis,
1608-1610. Cicely, 1610-1651, married Ralph Freke in 1636. Mary,
born 1612, married Sir William Clarke. Frances, 1613-1682, married
William Freke. Philippa, 1615-1638, never married. Sir Thomas, Jr.
13h, 1626-1697, first married Dame Dowsey, a widow, in 1661, and
in 1663 she died. In 1663, he married his cousin, Alicia Culpeper, daughter of Baron, Lord Richard, 15p. Their son
William, 1665-1727, married 3 Jun 1709, Elizabeth Gill. They had
six children: Elizabeth, John, Spenser, Thomas, Ann, Cornelia, and
Frances, 1664-1740, married her cousin, Baron, Lord John Culpeper 14w, the son of Baron, Lord John
Culpeper 13w, who had married
her aunt, Judith Culpeper, above mentioned. See chapter 4,
Hollingbourn. |
John
Culpeper 12f
Born in 1565, died 20 Dec. 1635. He inherited Feckenham from
his uncle Dr. Martin Culpeper llf. He first married Ursula
Woodcock in 1600. They had: Thomas, 1602-1652, their heir, Cicily,
1604-1664, John, 1606-1674, Francis. His second wife was Elinor
Norwood, his last wife was ANN, widow of Hugh Goddard. See 5
Feckenham. |

Alexander Culpeper 13b
He first married Elizabeth, daughter of
Sir Thomas Roberts of Glassonbery. They had a daughter, Ann, who
was born in 1603 She married Thomas, heir of Sir Henry Shelgrave,
in 1624. Alexander next married Jane Burrell of county Sussex.
They had no children. Ann, as the heiress of Sir Alexander,
transferred the estate of Bedgebury to the Shelgraves. Thus, the
End of Culpepers at
Bedgebury. |

Thomas
Culpeper 13f
He was probably born at Harietsham, co. Kent, in 1602. He was
schooled in the law and practiced that profession. He served as a
Colonel in King Charles I service and saw action in battle. He was
a member of the Virginia Co. 'He married in 1629 Catherine
daughter of Sir Warham St. Leger and the adopted daughter of his
uncle Alexander Culpeper 12w of Greenway Court. He emigrated to
Virginia with his family in 1650, and died there at James Town, in
1652, just before his daughters married. He and his brother were
the last of the Wigsell Culpepers. See chapter 5, Feckenham.
John Culpeper 13f
He was born at Harietsham, co. Kent, in 1606, and died in 1674,
at Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia He was schooled in the
law but did not persue it. Ile was a London- Virginia merchant. He
and his brother owned the ships Culpeper and the Thomas and John.
Records show him coming to and going from Virginia from 1640 to
1664, then staying in Northampton Co. His son Henry, arrived in
Virginia about March of 1653, to help in the business. Robert,
Denny and Thomas arrived in Virginia about June of 1664. James,
the oldest, came and went several times, but remained in London
with the business. At the end of his life, John was the Sheriff
and County Clerk of Northampton County. The
American Culpeppers of today are the lineal descendants of this
John Culpeper through his two sons, Henry and Robert of Norfolk
County, Virginia. See Chapters 6, 7 and 9. |

Alexander Culpeper
14f
He was born in 1631, died in 1694. He never married. He was the
Surveyor General of Virginia and one-sixth proprietor of the
Northern Neck of Virginia under the Charter of 1669-1688. On the
death of his father in Virginia, he and his mother returned to
England. On his death he willed all of his holdings to his
cousin's wife, Lady Margaret Van Hess of Leeds Castle, in county
Kent.
Ann Culpeper (14f)
She was born in 1630 and died in 1695. In 1652, she married
Christopher Danby of Thorpe Perrow, County York, England. One of
her daughters married Joseph Goodyear of Rappahannock County,
Virginia.
Frances Culpeper
Born 1634, died at James Town, Virginia
in 1690. First married in 1652 to Samuel Stephens of Warwick
County, Virginia, sometimes Governor of Albemarle Province
(Currituck, Pasquotank, Camden and Perquimans Counties, NC. Her
second husband was Baron, Lord William Berkeley, Governor of
Virginia and, one of the proprietors of the Carolinas. She married
last Philip Ludwell, also sometimes Governor of Albemarle.
John Culpeper 14f
As was his brother and sisters, he was born at Hollingbourn,
county Kent, in 1633, and died at Edenton, Chowan County, N.C., in
1690. He was schooled as a lawyer in England. He came to the
Carolinas from Barbados to be the Surveyor General. He led the
first revolution in America, then tried in England for treason,
but because of his powerful connections he was acquited. He is
known in history as "The Carolina Rebel." He left two
daughters. See chapter 5. |
