Writing & Producing Promotions for the Smaller
Business
For most of my adult working life, I had a great time helping companies take advantage
of different communication media to better position themselves and their products in the
marketplace. By hiring on to a variety of communication- intensive companies, I learned
very effective, very cost-efficient ways to apply specific communication technologies to
specific business objectives for the benefit of both my clients and employer.
Starting with the telecommunications industry, I worked in marketing, designed and
implemented telecommunication solutions for an incredible list of companies. Then, a few
years later, I moved into audio visual and multi-media production. There I designed and
sold production services and facility support for educational and promotional
presentations, traveling the country to help clients put on the good show they needed.
After several years, I migrated into trade publishing, selling magazine advertising space
to businesses seeking to do more business with other businesses. I helped small, medium
and large organizations effectively design their advertising message to reach the various
audiences my publications delivered.
I've been a sales manager and a sales grunt. I have produced entire promotional
campaigns using print, electronic media and direct mail. And, up to 1993, all of it was
done while I was an employee for one company or another. But, through it all, somehow I
knew that there had to be a better way of helping people more effectively get the
promotion job done.
If you have ever asked yourself the question "what's important in life,
anyway?" you know the true answers are found in relationships with other people. Not
with things. Not with projects. Not with money. Certainly not with anything as
euphemistically referred to as "a career."
When I realized that what mattered to me most was my family, I dumped my
"career" and started doing what I enjoyed. That was five years ago. I haven't
looked back.
I am 51 years old, married to Lynn for 20 years, and I have four children: Two girls,
Kristin and Rebecca (the youngest), and two boys, David and Jon (the oldest).
What This Means to You:
This means I am not going to waste your time. I'll listen patiently to your need to
reach other businesses, and tell you upfront if I think I can help you. If I think I can
help you, you will quickly know what I can do for you and how much it will cost to do it.
This also means you will probably acheive your objectives a great deal sooner, and at
less expense. This will be particularly true if you have used more traditional channels of
promotion (marketing firms, ad agencies, public relations companies, etc.). Traditional
channels have vested interest in placing excessive amounts of their billable services in
as many media as they can find. Their broad brush approach to media selection pads their
vouchers and depletes your bank account. I approach media selection not with a broad
brush, but with an eye-dropper. This delivers maximum results for your investment.
This also means you will not be ignored. When you and I are "in-project" you
are not a small fish in a big pond. You are the only fish in a well-attended aquarium.
I like to work with companies employing fewer than 100 people. This usually means there
is an entrepreneur there typically wearing a lot of hats. I can usually make life a little
bit easier almost immediately by putting on a hat or two in short order.
If that sounds good to you, let me know.
