Dr. Malcolm Oliver Perry, II
A Culpepper Descendant and Surgeon who Attended President John F.
Kennedy after his 1963 shooting in Dallas
Malcolm Oliver Perry II, was born and raised in Allen, Collin Co, TX. He was four years
old when his father was killed in an accident. Dr. Perry went on to earn his B. A. from
the University of Texas in 1951 and his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern
Medical School at Dallas, in 1955. He then interned at Letterman Army Hospital in San
Francisco, CA while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force. He left the service with the
rank of Captain in 1958. Following this, Dr. Perry did his residency in surgery at
Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX until 1962. In 1962, Dr. Perry remained at
Parkland Memorial Hospital but he also became a fellow in vascular surgery at the
University of California in San Francisco and an assistant professor of surgery at the
University of Texas in Dallas, TX.
At this point, Dr. Perry found himself at the crossroads of history. When President
Kennedy was shot in Dallas, TX on Nov. 22, 1963, Dr. Perry was one of the attending
physicians in the Parkland Memorial Hospital emergency room.
A summary of the events at the hospital was written by Kemp Clark, M.D., Director,
Service of Neurological Surgery at the hospital. That summary is
included as part of Appendix VIII, "Medical Reports From Doctors at Parkland Memorial
Hospital, Dallas, Tex." from the Report of the President's Commission on the
Assassination of President John F. Kennedy a.k.a. The Warren Report.
Dr. Perry's handwritten Parkland Memorial Hospital Admission Note was included as
Commission Exhibit No. 392 and Dr. Perry was one of the doctors called to testify before
the Commission because of the controversy about the direction and number of bullets that
had hit the President. Dr. Perry's observations and testimony were included in Chapter III of the Medical Examiner's Report.
After this life changing experience, Dr. Perry then continued with his medical career
becoming chief of vascular surgery in 1967 and a professor of surgery in 1971. In 1974,
Dr. Perry became a professor of surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. In
1978, he became a professor of surgery and chief of vascular surgery at Cornell University
Medical College in New York, NY. In 1987, Dr. Perry went on to Vanderbilt University
School of Medicine in Nashville, TN. In 1991, he was made chief of vascular surgery at
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX. And currently (Jan 1999), he
is back in Dallas at the St. Paul Medical Center, Department of Surgery.
Dr. Perry is the son of Kent Cannon Perry, son of Malcolm Oliver Perry, son of
John Wesley Perry and Martha Louisa D. Culpepper, daughter of William Henry Culpepper.
