Wilbur Fiske Culpepper, MD

After the drug store burned, Charles left and became a multi-millionaire with the Coca Cola Company. Wilbur was educated at Columbia University and occupied for many years the historic home in Senoia, now known as the Culpepper House and run as a B&B.

Louisiana (10)

Albert Lloyd Culpepper, MD
Born 24 Nov 1903, Hoods Mill, Jackson Parish, LA, died 5 Feb 1988, Pineville, Rapides Parish, LA.  Dr. Culpepper's medical degree was earned at George Washington University. He had further training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and in 1931 did his internship at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, where he met his wife, Amelia Leake, a surgical nurse. This was followed by a two year residency in pathology at LSU Medical School in 1932-33. 
   Dr. Culpepper taught Pathology at the Tulane/LSU University medical center in New Orleans. His credentials also included Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He  and Amelia Leake were married in St. Francisville, LA in 1933, and the next year they moved to Alexandria, LA where he set up a general clinical practice, with specialties in surgery and Ob/Gyn. 
   He performed open heart surgery long before it was called such or done by anyone else in Louisiana. In the early 1940's, Dr. Culpepper opened the thorax of a Louisiana man who had been stabbed in a knife fight, and sewed him back together. He lived for many years afterward, and that is how Dr. Culpepper was selected for the American College of Surgeons at a very young age.
   At the age of 63 he sold his clinic, and returned to medical school in Psychiatry, earning that certification as well. He finally retired at the age of 74 from a long and illustrious medical career.
   Aside from his medical skills he played violin in the Alexandria-Pineville Symphony, and once made a violin, tutored by an Italian patient .He avidly cultivated camelias, day lilies, Louisiana irises, and was president of the state societies. He was a licensed lay reader in the Episcopal Church. He was absolutely devoted to his wife of 55 years, Amelia Mumford Leake Culpepper, and to us three children -- Richard Leake Culpepper, Mary Mallory Culpepper Pearson, and Dorothy Wailes Culpepper Buoni. Walter Shelley Culpepper, Jr., MD

He was on the staff of Ochsner Foundation Hospital and practiced general internal medicine for 36 years as a staff member, and later a partner, at Ochsner Clinic. He also was clinical professor of medicine at Tulane University. He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and numerous other professional societies.

He taught in the school of Medicine at Syracuse University until 1917. He was a Flight Surgeon in the Army during WW I serving in France. After the war he opened a clinic in South Bend, Indiana, and subsequently moved to Illinois where he lived for many years in Chicago and other cities in Illinois, before moving to Louisiana.
