An article written by Suffolk native Chuck Culpepper was named Sports Story of the Year
for 1989 by the Hearst Newspapers chain.
Culpepper, as tennis writer for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, wrote the story last
June from Wimbledon, England, as a preview to last summer's tournament. It was a
50-column-inch piece focusing on Michael Chang, the California teenager who had won the
French Open several weeks prior.
The Hearst Corporation closed the 118-year-old Herald Examiner on Nov. 1. Culpepper, a
1984 graduate of the University of Virginia, was hired then by the National Sports Daily,
which opened Jan. 31 in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. He works in Chicago writing
Notre Dame football and twice-weekly local columns.
