Richard Clark Culpeper
Canadian National Ski Team
Telemark Division
Richard Clark Culpeper placed seventeenth in the Super-G discipline
at the 1996 World Telemark Championships. No one was more
surprised than he.
One winter, while cross-country skiing in the backwoods of northern
Ontario, Richard kept falling down a small cliff on his route. Not
particularly enjoying this, he tried learning how to handle steep turns
at the local downhill ski area. A fellow came along and said
"Hey, telemarking, cool!" To make a long story short, it
turns out that telemarking is a traditional form of skiing which
involves downhill skiing on crosscountry skis. Who'd have thunk
it.
Richard got in touch with a handful of other telemarkers in Ontario,
and together they started a race series, with Richard putting out
the newsletter. Over the years the series grew into a high-end
race circuit across the country, the organization became part of the
Canadian Ski Association and the Federation Internationale de Ski.
The top racers began to race internationally on the World Cup tour.
After several year of racing at the nationals, Richard made the
national team in the masters category. He represented Canada in
the super-giant slalom in 1996 at the World Telemark Championships,
where he placed 17th. Since that time, he has focused on tele-bump
skiing, which is not a competitive discipline -- yet. And yes, he
still shuffles about the northern woods in the winter, and still falls
down.
