Birth*1694 John was born at Warwick Co., Virginia, in 1694. He is the only son of Richard Whitaker and Elizabeth Pyland on record.1,2

Marriage*1716 He married Martha Gough at Warwick Co., Virginia, in 1716. Most of the sons of John and Martha--Robert, Richard, John, Gough and Dudley--settled in Halifax Co., NC. Their sons James and William settled in the Camden District of SC. The children of John and Martha also included a daughter, Martha, and all are recorded in the records of Middlesex Church, Warwick Co., VA. All of their sons received land grants in North Carolina..1,2 
Relocation1740 He relocated in 1740 (John and Martha evidently moved from Warwick County to Halifax Co., NC with their children around 1740. A deed dated 19 Oct 1744 was given him for land in Halifax County and another in 1745 and later, in addition to land grants much earlier. Some sources say that John and Martha were the founders of Whitaker's Anglican place of worship, later becoming affiliated with the Methodists in 1776 or 1778. The first chapel was a log building. The third chapel now standing (in 1994) was erected 1850 and in 1880 was moved across the road.). 
Death*1750 He died at Warwick Co., Virginia, in 1750.3 
Biography* John Whitaker, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Whitaker was born 1694, died about 1748. He married Martha Gough. They had seven sons : Richard, Gough, James, John, Robert, William and Dudley. All of these 'sons moved from Virginia, to Halifax County, N. C. James and William went from there to Camden, S. C. James Whitaker married Catherine Wiggins. Their children were: Martha, Catherine, Willis, John Wiggins, James and Mary. Martha married James Cantey, of Camden, S. C. Catherine married Francis Boykin, of Camden, S. C. John Whitaker, II, of Halifax County, N. C., the brother of James, married Olive Taylor, whose children were: Hudson, Edward, Thomas, Samuel, Margaret, Olive Chambers, and Martha. John, II, died in 1784. His will is recorded in Halifax County, N. C.4
