| Biography* | According to the Naturalization Index, Edward resided at 148 W 73rd St, New York, NY at the time of his naturalization on 3 May 1920. Edward was married to "Alice PETERS of Barbados", b abt 1876 in St. Michael, Barbados, daughter of "Isabel PETERS of Barbados". Alice was a launderer, could read and write, and was 5' 4", and was Black. She immigrated on the S.S. Aidan on 20 May 1914, coming to join her husband "Edward St. C. Culpepper at 100 W 134th St, New York, NY. She became a naturalized citizen in 1920 and returned to Barbados on a visit for an unknown duration, re-entering Ellis Island on 6 Dec 1923, specifying her residence as 148 W 73rd St, New York, NY. . In the 1920 Census (Ancestry.com, ED 553, Image 15) we find in the household of John H. Abeal (A widowed white male, age 73) at 148 W 73rd St: . 1. Sinclair Culpepper, Servant (Butler), Black, Married, Male, Age 53, immigrated 1912, naturalized 1917, born in Barbados, as were his parents. [Note the 1917 date contradicts the 1920 naturalization date previously mentioned. I doubt that he was really naturalized at the time of the 1920 census] 2. Alice Culpepper, Servant (Chambermaid), Black, Married, Female, Age 45, immigrated 1914, naturalized 1917, born in Barbados, as were her parents. 3. Mary Martindale, Servant (Cook), Black, Single, Female, Age 40, immigrated 1912, still an alien, born in Guiana, as were her parents. |
