| DNA* | The ancestry of Jefferson James Culpepper of Harris Co., GA is unknown. To help determine it, we are seeking a descendant to participate in our free DNA testing project. For more information, go to http://gen.culpepper.com/dna (Jeff was probably a grandson of James I. J. Culpepper. Jeff had several sons who were killed in the Civil War, and they were living in Harris County at the outbreak of the war. I suspect that Jeff (born 1861) is the orphan son of one of those soldiers. The two sons who died in the war were Nathan F. Culpepper and George W. Culpepper. A third son, John, appears to have died not long after the war. All three of these men married before the war, but determining who their children were has been difficult. DNA testing can confirm whether or not they are members of this general branch, but narrowing down to a specific father will require finding specific documentation such as an old family Bible or a will.).3,4 | |

My Dad said no, definitely was not his Dad. He said he thought it was "Pappy." Now I'm sure that Pappy was his grandfather, but I don't know which one. I do think it is Jesse Culpepper, since both my Dad and his mother look like the person in the photo a lot." | Research note* | 1 Nov 2003 | From: Lew Griffin To: Esther Miron, 1060 Middle Creek Road, Elizabethtown, Kentucky 42701 Dear Esther, Good to hear from you. You are right, it has been a while. I haven’t forgotten about your Jesse Jeff / Jeff J. Culpepper, but haven’t come up with much new on him, either. He was in Covington Co. AL in 1920 living with his son Allen D. C. Culpepper, but he was not listed in the book on Covington Co. Cemetery records, and there does not appear to be an Alabama death certificate for him. If we could come up with a death certificate for him, then it might list his parents, if the informant knew who they were at the time of his death. Another possibility is the Bible record you mention, belonging to his daughter Clara Belle Culpepper Phillips. If you know who currently has the Bible, I’ll be glad to contact them for us and see if they will send us a copy of the information. I assume Clara’s daughter, Mary Louise (born 18 Sep 1918) is deceased, and that one of her children has it. Or perhaps we can find a Bible record for the Jesse Jeff family itself, which might be even more helpful. Have you ever located descendants of any of Clara Belle’s brothers or sisters? Do you know who any of her sisters married? On the Phillips and Culpepper connections on both sides of your family, that is interesting, but may just be a coincidence. John Asbury Sewell, who married Sarah Elizabeth Culpepper, was the son of John Pierce Sewell and Louisa Elizabeth Wideman. Zora Culpepper, who married John Asbury’s brother Marshall M. Sewell, was the daughter of James Daniel Culpepper, brother of Sarah Elizabeth Culpepper Sewell, mentioned above. As you point out, this Sewell family also intermarried with the Phillips family in Meriwether. If the Phillips family in Meriwether is connected to your Phillips family in Harris County, I’m not aware of the connection. However, you are probably right about a connection between the Culpepper family of Meriwether, and your Jesse Jeff Culpepper. My suspicion has always been that your Jesse Jeff was the grandson of James J. Culpepper, brother of George Washington Culpepper of Meriwether. James had several sons who were killed in the Civil War, and they were living in Harris County at the outbreak of the war. I suspect your Jesse Jeff (born 1861) is the orphan son of one of those soldiers. The two sons who died in the war were Nathan F. Culpepper and George W. Culpepper. A third son, John, appears to have died not long after the war. All three of these men married before the war, but determining who their children were has been difficult. For instance, I have never been able to find your Jesse Jeff on the 1870 census in either Georgia or Alabama. By the 1880 census he is already married and living with the Phillips family. I’ve never located his marriage record, and if that could be found, it might at least list the name of his mother, if he was underage when he got married. So that would be another possibility. Nor have I ever found Madison Phillips, Jesse’s father-in-law, in the 1870 census. I did find what I believe to be his marriage to Sarah Stillwell, 30 Sep 1855, Henry Co. GA. .... Thanks for getting back in touch. One of these days we’ll get this all figured out. Regards, Lew Griffin.4,3 |
