| Biography* | From Kimberly Ann Culpepper Dezern, September 2000: She [Annie Laurie] was, technically, my great-aunt..... However she, in large part, raised my father (Stephen D. Culpepper) after the death of his mother (Ruth Wright), and has always been considered my grandmother. She would tell me how Grandmother Ruth came through her bedroom window one night shortly after her passing and told her to "take care of her boy." (He was only one year old, the last of six children, all girls.) And she most certainly did! . Annie Culpepper Pope, 76, of the 3200 block of Old Mill Road, died Sept. 12, 1990, in a Portsmouth hospital. Mrs. Pope, a native of Norfolk County, was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Nathan Pope; a daughter, JoAnne C. Armstrong, and two sons, Stephen D. Culpepper and Joseph N. Pope Jr., all of Chesapeake; three brothers, Leroy N. Culpepper III and Vernon M. Culpepper, both of Chesapeake, and Beverly B. Culpepper of Suffolk; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Roscoe A. Musselwhite. Burial will be in the Culpepper family cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Sturtevant Funeral Home. (13 Sep 1990, The Virginian-Pilot.). |
