Before leaving for the war, he wrote the following in the back of the William Culpepper family Bible: "Leaves here the first day of May in the year 1862 and leaves his true father and mother on the count of the war and his sisters and more than that he leaves his true sweetheart but he is in hopes that he will soon be home.").
