In 1883 he entered Howard College in Birmingham, which he attended for three years. The Baptist State Mission Board then sent him to Bessemer, AL, which was then a rapidly growing town with no Baptist church. After two years in Bessemer he accepted an invitation to the pastorate of the Second Church, Meridian, MS, then called Calvary Baptist, now part of Forty-First Avenue Baptist. After two years there, William spent some months in revival meetings with different churches. He entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the fall of 1893, and spent a year there before returning to the ministry in Mississippi (From Mississippi Baptist Preachers, by Foster, p.174-175). William was a member of the King Solomon Masonic Lodge in Meridian and was also mentioned in the book, "Southern Baptist Ministers." |
