In 1863 he was assigned to Co. B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and later served in Co. C. When the 24th and other units were consolidated to form the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, he served in Co. D. April - August, 1864 muster roll indicated that he lost his mount June 11, 1864. Private John Culpepper was captured on May 8, 1865 at Athens, Ga. and paroled the same day. Merriday H. Culpepper was his older brother and Caleb O.
