| Research note* | 3 Oct 2004 | From Bill Draper: You include Henry David (1833), but he is not listed in the 1850 census in Henry's household. What is his source? From Lew Griffin: As for Henry David as a son of Henry, this is from a process of elimination. Unlike Henry, some of his brothers left wills or estates, which help with the process of elimination. Also, Henry (H. D.) was listed as a farm laborer in 1860, and he might well have been one in 1850 as well. After looking at many census records over the years, I feel that farm laborers, particularly young ones, were often excluded from census records. The census taker assumed they would be recorded at home, and yet they were not at home: so young farm workers not living at home were often missed in census records. If you have records proving the ancestry of this Henry David Culpepper let us know.2 |
