     WILL OF SAMPSON CULPEPPER
I, Sampson Culpepper, of the State of Georgia, and County of Laurens, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following to-wit:
     First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Martha Culpepper during her natural life 200 acres of land where I now live; two feather beds and furniture together with all my household and kitchen furniture and
plantation tools of every description and two cows and calves and eight head of hogs.
     ITEM. I give to my beloved son Thomas K. Culpepper all the notes or the obligations which I have paid the money for which was given by him todifferent persons.
     ITEM. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Mary Smith one feather bed and furniture which she has in possession.
     ITEM. I give and bequeath to my beloved sons John C. and Joel Culpepper all my land and premises with all my household and kitchen furniture and plantation tools and stocks of every kind and description to be equally divided after the death of their mother. I give to my son John Culpepper one bay mare filly to be his property. I give to my son Joel Culpepper one sorrell mare filly to be his property. I give and bequeath to my beloved grandson, Blount Culpepper, one cow and calf or ten dollars in money. (The grandson, Blount, has not otherwise been identified)
     I do hereby nominate and constitute and appoint my son John C. Culpepper and Joel Culpepper sole Executors to this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th, of March 1822.
     Signed sealed and acknowledged in the presence of John Thomas, David Culpepper, Winnifred Wright.

     GEORGIA Court of Ordinary January 13th, 1823. The written will of Sampson Culpepper deceased was duly proven in open court by oath of Winfield Wright, esq. one of the subscribing witnesses in order to be recorded attested by Neal Munson, Clerk. Recorded March 8th, 1823..2 
Miscellaneous11 Aug 1828 Martha Culpepper of Jackson Co., said she was moving and appointed Joel Culpepper as her lawful attorney to sell 200 acres on Big Creek, Buckeye Creek in Laurens Co. Wit: T. Peoples and James Rylie, JP. On 11 Aug 1828 at Laurens Co., Georgia.3

Biography* Joel Culpepper probably moved from Georgia to Franklin County, IL, sometime before 1828, as his probable son, Joel, Jr., was born there that year. According to Joel Jr.'s military service record from the Mexican War, he was aged 19 in April 1847, and was born in Franklin County, IL.
