| Biography* | The name was given as "Feraba" "Feriba" and "Ferriba" in census records; as "Pheraby" in the marriage record, and "Jerba" in the death record. Louis Alford Culpepper gave his mother's name as "Ferby." The name is a corruption of "Phoebe." Ferby's relationship to Louraney Cardwell, wife of Robert J. Culpepper is unknown. Although census records indicate that she was born in Georgia, by 1855, Ferby had moved, presumably with her parents, to Chambers Co., AL where she married, William Washington Culpepper. Shortly after this, Ferby moved with her husband to Randolph Co., AL where she was noted in 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. In 1890, Ferby and her husband followed Robert Jefferson and Louraney (Cardwell) Culpepper to the Sand Mountain area of Marshall Co., AL settling on a farm on Slab Creek near the Mt. Vernon settlement. In a 26 Jul 1979 letter, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce wrote that "Uncle Bill and Aunt Fereby Culpepper only lived about 2 1/2 miles from grandpa and grandma Culpepper [John James Culpepper and Nancy Jane Willoughby]." Although Sand Mountain remained their home base for the remainder of their lives, apparently Ferby and her husband took time to visit their children since a 74 year old "Feaby" was listed with her husband in the 1900 census of Bell Co., TX living with their son, Louis Alford Culpepper. In fact Ferby would have been 65 or 66 years old depending on when the census was taken. A 75 year old "Phereby" was recorded with her husband in the 1910 census of Marshall Co., AL, and this is where she died and was buried in 1911. |
