Biography* A descendant, P. Melton Culpepper, Jr., wrote 22 Mar 1991: Sneads' log cabin was mentioned in a history on Crisp County written in 1931 (see below). The general location was refered to in proximity to a flowing well which is still present in the Georgia Veterans State Park in this County. A former superintendant of the Park in his 70's remembered where an old log cabin once burned which was the same one mentioned in the History. He pointed it out to me and I went there and dug around and found some old square nails and broken glass. P. Melton Culpepper, Jr. wrote in a 3 Jun 1991 letter to Georgia Dept. of Archives and History, that he had willed the David Sneads Culpepper Family Bible to his son Jackson Campbell Culpepper. In March of 1985, Perry Melton Culpepper, Jr. supplied the following information about the Bible: This Bible was said to have originally been the property of David Sneads Culpepper (7-29-181[4 crossed out and 6 written in. Unfortunatley the last number of the date in the Bible record is also smeared, it could be a four or a six] - 3-5-1886), son of David Culpepper and Elizabeth Hogan. It was given to his youngest daughter, Julia Emma Culpepper Brown, who, is thought to have made many of the entries in it. She died childless and at her death it was given to her great-nephew, Samuel Jackson Culpepper, son of Thomas Albert Culpepper. Samuel died on July 3, 1970, in Crisp County, Georgia, but the Bible had been given to his youngest son, Leon Raines Culpepper in 1962. On March 1, 1985, Leon, who did not have any natural male children, gave the Bible to his nephew, Perry Melton Culpepper, Jr., son of Perry Melton Culpepper. Leon had had the Bible sent off and repaired, but the original cover was retained. When the Bible was received by Perry Melton Culpepper, Jr., there was a small photograph of Julia Brown taped on the inside leaf in the front.
.
From: "Crisp County, Georgia: Historical Sketches" by Judge W. Fleming, 1931: "David Sneads Culpepper moved with his family about 1835 from Laurens County, Georgia, to Dooly, now. Crisp County, and settled in this immediate vicinity at what is now Daphne. Their first home was a one-room rough-log house with shed on one side for the slaves to sleep in. Cooking was done outside in the open. Later a better house was built -- a double-pen log structure, ruins of which are observable a short distance west of the flowing well at Daphne.
.
On the way from Laurens County, the family camped one night on the east side of the Ocmulgee River near Hawkinsville, at the home-place of a farmer, or cattleman. The trip was made in oxcarts, in which were
brought hogs, cattle, chickens, slaves, and other property belonging to the family. The journey was made by way of the old Blackshear Road that was opened in 1814. At this camping place this incident occurred: Next morning before resuming the journey, one of the farmer's pigs joined the Culpepper pigs on the raft near Hawkinsville and went with his new found pig acquaintances a full-day's journey. Upon return that way several weeks thereafter, Mr. Culpepper made inquiry of his farmer friend and was informed that the run-away pig had, for some pig reason satisfactory to itself, repented and come back home to his Pa and Ma, having swum the river to accomplish the feat."
