| Biography* | Joel and Margaret had no children. According to his niece, Mrs. W. B. (M. Louise Culpepper) Broach, at the age of 12 Joel was working the family farm with his 10 year old brother, Will, since his father had been left an invalid by an illness and his older brothers had married or gone West. The following is from a manuscript by Kathryn English Culpepper, as transcribed by Gayle L. Poole: Joel: Was a jovial, witty man. His nieces and nephews called him "Uncle Buddy", and followed him all over the farm. He was adept at shoeing the farm animals which fascinated the children who loved to the sparks when he hammered the red-hot shoes, and they loved to watch as he worked the bellows. All the young women in the neighborhood vied with one another for his attentions and he was capable of sidestepping their advances without making them mad. In his later years, he moved to Calhoun, GA (about 8 miles away from the Farm). He worked in the office of a large warehouse. That is where he met and married Miss Maggie Addington. They had no children. |
