Biography* Mrs. W. B. (M. Louise Culpepper) Broach 22 Aug 1978 wrote that her father was born 7 Jul 1868 and in fact a 1 year old "Millen" was recorded in the Charles W. Culpepper household in the 1870 census. But in the 1900 census what appears to be William was recorded with a May 1874 birth date. This must be a copy error since a 41 year old "William Culpepper" born in Georgia was recorded (p. 66, family 6) with his wife and young family in the 1910 census of Rome, Floyd Co., GA. In a 5 Nov 1978 letter Mrs. W. B. (M. Louise Culpepper) Broach added that after the older children had left home, her father, William Henry Culpepper, and his older brother, Joel, were left to do the farming for their father: Remember this is right after the Civil War and things were hard. Our grandfather had an illness that left him an invalid and Osbit and my Uncle Joel who was about 12 yrs. old and my father, Will, who was about 10 were the only ones left at home to work the farm. Well, Osbit took off for the West and left the little boys to work the farm. William Henry later ran a men's clothing store in Rome, GA.

The following is from a manuscript by Kathryn English Culpepper, as transcribed by Gayle L. Poole:

William Henry was the youngest son. He and his brother, Joel, were left to do what farming they could after their father became a semi-invalid.

When he was eighteen, things on the farm were in bad shape and they were in need of cash, so Will left Joel to do what farming he could, while he came to Rome, GA, to find work, so he could by the necessities, at the farm.

He found a job at a sash, door and blind factory, and every Saturday afternoon he boarded the train at Reeves Station (the little station stands today on the grounds of the Rome Civic Center and is used as a Welcome Center to Visitors in Rome) where Uncle Buddy (our name for Joel) met him with the buggy. He handed his mother his week's wages, leaving himself only enough for train fare and to pay his board for a week. As time went on, he got a job as a salesman in a large "Department Store", "H.L. Lanham and Sons:. Later he made a change to "Hill and Owens", a men's wear store. While there he married and started his family. He was an excellent salesman.

He was an active member of what is now, Trinity United Methodist Church. He served as Steward, Trustee, and was Treasurer of the church for many years. He was honest, devout Christian and brought his children up in the Church, constantly warning them about the pitfalls in life, and how to cope with them.

He was very anxious that each of his children should have a college education. It was "when you go to College, not if you go to College."

Well loved and respected by all who knew him, always ready to lend a hand to those in need.

Later he opened a Men's Clothing Store on his own, with Joel and Oscar Storey as partners, called "Culpepper, Storey and Company". The business thrived until the Depression of 1930, when he lost it. After that he steadily went downhill until his death. It was a shock from which he never recovered.
