Biography* The following is from a manuscript by Kathyrn English Culpepper, as transcribed by Gayle L. Poole:

Lula: She, too, helped hold the family together by teaching school. (As did Lenny who worked in a seamstress' establishment). Lula loved to read and entertain us children by reading books like, "Little Women", which she borrowed from the lending library who sent books into the rural communities.

She was loved, and remembered, by her pupils as an excellent teacher.

She always took me to Sunday school, at Johnson's Chapel when I visited in the Country ( I could not wait to get to the country the minute school was out for the Summer).

She drove Hamp, a great Appaloosa, sixteen hands high and always at a certain place in front to the old barn. Hamp began to "act up" pretending to be frightened, but Lula would stand for no foolishness, she would brace herself and jerk the reins which brought Hamp almost to a sitting position. I thought she was great!!!

She married Dr. Gray, the country doctor a few years after her mother's death, and moved, first, to Everett Springs, then to Sugar Valley, and finally spent her last years in the old family home.

Her daughter, Mary, was also a teacher in Floyd County, then in Dalton where She died. She never married.

C.T. (Charles Thomas Gray) left home to enter the Army in World War II. He never returned home, and lives somewhere in Virginia. Was married twice, but had no children.

When Dr, Gray cam courting Aunt Lula, he always bought her something, and once, when I was there he bought a big basket of Concord Grapes ( to this day, my favorite fruit). Aunt Lula called me in and gave me some. What a treat!

All of a sudden, I had an idea that he may take them with him when he left. So when I could get Aunt Lula to herself I whispered . "Will he take the grapes when he goes?"

Of course, she told him, and I could hear the laughter"

He didn't take the grapes, thank goodness.
