Biography*  Virgil Culpepper wrote 26 Aug 1978: My Father was A. L. Culpepper Taylor County, Ga.
It is not clear whether this was meant as a place of birth or not but this is where "Augustus L. Culpepper" first appeared in census records in 1860. Mrs. John (Dorothy Culpepper) Wingfield preserved a 25 page typed manuscript "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written by her grandfather, Rev. George Bright Culpepper, who noted: AUGUSTUS LAFAYETTE CULPEPPER On March 27, 1855, was born to James Marion Culpepper and his wife, Lucy, a son, to whom was given the name of Augustus LaFayette. This son grew to manhood and married Eliza Jane Brooks, daughter of Reverend B. C. M. Brooks, of Macon County, Georgia. The marriage was in October 1874 at the home of the bride. There was quite a large crowd of neighbors and friends present; and on the following day the father of the groom gave a large barbecue dinner when another large crowd gathered. Wyatt Brooks officiated at the marriage.... Fayette Culpepper and his wife Jennie moved from Chattooga County, Georgia, over on Sand Mountain, near Attala, Alabama. There a third son, George Lovick, was born. Fayette and Jennie decided to return to Georgia, but before they reached the old home George Lovick died, on the way, in Macon, at the home of John Butler Culpepper.... In the winter of the next year, 1887, Fayette and Jennie and their children moved to Pratt City, Alabama, where Jennie died.... After Jennie's death Fayette came back to Georgia for a time. The children - Jim, Brooks, Otis and Lucy Kate - spent several years with their maternal and paternal grandparents. After about two years Fayette went to Wilmore, Kentucky, and married a Miss Miller. They came back to Pratt City where a son, Virgil Miller Culpepper, was born.... Virgil's wife is a half-niece of Virgil's father's first wife. Virgil's wife's father was a half-brother of Jennie, Virgil's father's first wife; but Virgil's mother was the second wife of Fayette and her son married the daughter of his step-mother's half-brother. If you can, you may figure out the fam-mix-up. Jennie is buried in Pratt City, Virgil's mother is buried in Wilmore, Kentucky, and Fayette is buried near Pasadena, California.
Augustus LaFayette Culpepper was known as "Fayette." The 1910 census showed Augustus Culpepper working as a carpenter for a coal mine. On his death certificate in 1935, he was still listed as a carpenter. It also shows that he had been in California for 9 years and he came from Altadena, CA to Rancho Los Amigos, 553 East Vermont, Downey, CA where he died of Generalized Arteriosclerosis and Chronic Myocarditis. (Mrs.) Joyce Lawrence of the Downey Historical Society wrote, 23 Mar 1980, that Rancho Los Amigos is "affiliated with the USC School of Medicine and world famous for rehabilitation of catastrophic illnesses and injuries and for great strides in prosthetics research."
