Biography* Mrs. John (Dorothy Culpepper) Wingfield preserved a 25 page typed manuscript "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written by her grandfather, Rev. George Bright Culpepper, who noted: MARTHA JANE CULPEPPER In 1859, on the 30th day of September, about ten miles southwest of Butler, Taylor County, Georgia, at what was then known as Joiner's Court Ground, a daughter was born to James Marion Culpepper and his wife, Lucinda. This daughter was given the name of Martha Jane, for two of her mother's sisters. The house where she was born was identified by the name of the Wyndham Place - long since removed. This daughter grew to womanhood and married a Methodist preacher, named Henry Caughey Brewton. They were married in Blakely, Early County, Georgia, at the home of Reverend John Butler Culpepper, in 1882. Mattie's husband was the Methodist pastor of what was called the Trinity Circuit.... The above is about the best history I can give as to Martha (Mattie) Jane Culpepper. She died at Elko, Georgia, on May 16, 1903, and is buried in Fort Valley, Georgia. Henry Brewton married again in 1906, Mrs. Minnie Blanton Davis, who died in 1923, and is buried in Fort Valley. Henry died on May 1, 1934 and lies buried in the Fort Valley cemetery between his two wives. Mattie was 43 when she died and Henry was almost 82.
Martha is listed as "Mattie J. Brewton" on her tombstone.
