| Biography* | | Mrs. John (Dorothy Culpepper) Wingfield preserved a 25 page typed manuscript "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written by her grandfather, Rev. George Bright Culpepper, which noted: This brings us down to the year 1901 and to the month of June and to the 6th day of that month, when there was born to us another son. To this son we gave the name of John Shepard; for my brother, John B. Culpepper, and this son's grandfather, Shepard. He was born in what was called the Brick House on the west side of Knoxville Street, in Fort Valley, Georgia. The house is now owned and occupied by the great-aunt of John Shepard Culpepper - a 10-room, 2-story brick house, comfortable and strong.... John Shepard Culpepper, the third son and fourth child, of George B. Culpepper, Sr., and his wife Lilla, grew up to manhood and finally went to work for the railroad in the office in Fort Valley. And on October 20, 1920 went to Jacksonville and went to work for the Southern Railway where George White was Agent. He has been with the Southern Railway System from then until now (Oct. 6, 1942). From Jacksonville, Florida, he was transferred to Greenville, South Carolina. He is Freight Traffic Agent at Greenville now. Twelve years ago he married Miss Frances Baugh, of Greenville. They have two children, a son and daughter. John Shepard, Jr., is the name of the son, and Katherine Shaw is the name of the daughter. They are exceedingly bright children. They were both baptized in Fort Valley, Georgia, by Reverend George B. Culpepper, Sr., at the home of George B. Culpepper, Jr. John, as everybody calls him, is loved and honored by the entire city of Greenville. He is a Mason, a Kiwanian, a steward in the Buncomb Street Methodist Church, and is a teacher in the Sunday School, and often leads the services in not only Methodist churches but also in Presbyterian and Baptist churches as well. He is an upright and Godly man, for which I thank God. His wife is active in many affairs of the city, church and school. She is descended from the Jeffersons of Virginia. John is descended from the Culpeppers and Pierces of Virginia, the Gordons and Kings of Georgia. John was in Atlanta yesterday (Oct. 5) on his way back from Jacksonville, Florida, where he had gone to see his brother who has been seriously ill. |
