| Biography* | Mrs. John (Dorothy Culpepper) Wingfield preserved a 25 page typed manuscript "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written by her grandfather, Rev. George Bright Culpepper, which noted: On January 27, 1904, in Fort Valley, Georgia, the fourth son and fifth child was born to Reverend and Mrs. George B. Culpepper, Sr. Dr. Harris M. Branham was the officiating physician. To this son was given the name of Thomas Jackson, for his mother's oldest brother and for a business friend of his father, E. F. Jackson, at the time living in Atlanta. This son developed into a strong, healthy boy and grew to honorable manhood - strong, courageous, and thoroughly dependable in every walk of life. In the fall of 1921 he went to work for the Southern Railway at Jacksonville, Florida, where his brother John S. Culpepper, had been at work for a year. He continued there until 1939, when he was transferred to the Columbia Division of the road as Freight Traffic adjustor. He was transferred to Lynchburg Division of the Southern in 1941 and is living in Lynchburg, Virginia now. Before leaving Jacksonville, he married Miss Ola St. Claire Lewis, of that city who was then employed by the State Board of Health of Florida. She continued her work and after he was transferred to Columbia, she went to see him each alternate Friday and he went to see her the other, until 1940 when she resigned and went to live in Columbia where his office was. In order that they might be married by his father, they went from Jacksonville to Fort Valley for the ceremony. Her mother came with them by automobile. They were married on June 25, 1935, in the home of George B. Culpepper, Jr. Ola is a splendid woman and she and her husband are leading a happy and useful life as they pass along. They have no children, but both of them are always doing something to make some child happy or some grown person smile. They make the world better for their living in it. Their home life is smooth, even and joyous. |
