| Biography* | Erma was a beautiful woman and her children were beautiful also. Scott was also a beautiful man with brilliant blue eyes. I met them in their later years and they were still nice to look at. Erma had very deep dimples and when she laughed her eyes sparkled. She said that her grandmother, on her mother's side, was of indian blood, and I believed it because she had almost black hair and very dark brown eyes until her mid 70s. Half of her children had dark brown eyes and hair, and the others had blue eyes and light hair. ... She was a wonderful human being who was very creative and always laughing. ... She was always very spirited. She grew up picking cotton and her father would give her a little money to work. She decided that she didn't like working so she paid one of her sisters to pick her cotton and went into the woods, where she had made a play house.. to play. She said it was too hot. When she was almost 80 she went to the back of her apt in the wooded area, cut down 7 pine trees, cut them up and made herself a patio. ... Another family story is: When Erma and Scott's children were small, they lived in New Merkle out by Cahaba. At the time it was undeveloped, and just woods. Scott was a lineman for the telephone company. One day he fell from a pole and hurt his back so he couldn't work. Erma said every other morning she would go to the door and find food for her family. It had been put there by the Moonshiners, she thought, and she never saw them to thank them. She said they ate better after Scott fell than before, .. fresh eggs, fresh milk, etc.1 |
