| Biography* | Mrs. R. (Joyce Culpepper) Organ referred in a 28 Jul 1978 letter to Cornelius as "Uncle Necie." Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton wrote 10 Jul 1889 that she had located a "Delayed Birth Certificate" for C. V. Culpepper in Lavaca Co., TX: Cornelius Vanderbuilt Culpepper____b. 20 Apr 1880 _____to Franklin Olin Culpepper of Shiner _____and Eliza Jane Richardson_____b. Ala. _____2 children 2 living Mrs. C. V. (Lois Anderson) Culpepper wrote 1 Jul 1978: Cornelius died August 5, 1972 of heart failure at the age of 92. He was the last member of his family - all having preceded him in death.... Cornelius was a fine Christian man and a wonderful family man. He lived up to the reputation of the Culpepper name - honest in every detail and paid his debts. We had no children of our own. We adopted a little six weeks old baby boy [Claude Brotherton Culpepper who according to Mrs. R. (Joyce Culpepper) Organ in a 28 Jul 1978 letter was the son of Cully Brotherton of Comstock, Texas] whose mother died at his birth. He married and they had two boys and one girl - all took the Culpepper name. They have grown up to be lovely children. They have married and I now have four "great" grandchildren, all girls.... The following was a school assignment apparently written by Claude B. Culpepper, the adopted son of C. V. and Lois Culpepper: A Character Sketch of a Member of My Family The character I want to sketch is an unusual character. The community would not say as much. It would say he is a very ordinary person. Its opinion would be based on the fact that he lives a very ordinary life. He makes his living in a very ordinary way. His family is apparently as normal as the average family. He is regular in his church attendance. He pays his honest debts. His integrity is unquestioned. His influence in his community is that of an honorable and upright citizen. He has not accomplished any deeds of heroism, nor has his name been immortalized. From the casual observer his life is regular and routine. But to those who know him intimately he is most unusual. As a family man he is exceptional. The first characteristic that attracts you to him is his gentleness. Few mothers are more gentle than he. He is never too tired nor too busy to consider any need or wish of his family. He seems to forget himself completely in his thoughtfulness of others. He is always interested in their affairs and well-being. His own wishes and desires are held in abeyance until he is sure no one wishes otherwise. His unselfishness is unusual and his manner is so unobtrusive. When he performs unselfish acts for others, he leaves the feeling that he is just doing the natural thing. In fact, to please others seems the natural thing for him. His love for children is unusual. Children delight to be with him. He romps and plays with them. He has dolls and toys around the house waiting for a birthday or special occasion to give a gift to some little boy or girl. His appreciation of the asthetic is unusual. He loves anything pretty whether it be art, music, poetry or the great outdoors. He finds beauty in the little flower of the field and in the great sturdy oak. He appreciates the little horned toad that eats the ants and insects in the garden. He has been seen to spare the life of a harmless spiders that eat flyes and mosquitoes. He has studied their habits and characteristics and enjoys helping them carry on in their own world. He loves animals. He loves his horse and dogs and made friends of them almost equal to the friendship of a fellow-being. "For as he thinketh in his heart so is he." (Proverbs 23:7) Yes, to those who know him intimately he is most unusual. And this unusual person is none other than the husband and father of our home. |
